Skydiving is an inclusive term that covers any activity that involves leaving an aircraft in flight, performing some element of freefall, no matter how short, and opening a parachute for the descent to the gound. Within that activity there are a variety of sporting disciplines that fall under the heading of ‘Air Sports’. Some of these competitions involve maneuvers performed under parachute, and others performed in freefall itself. All of them, however, involve high levels of skill, concentration and focus, acquired by years of hard work, practice and dedication.
Formation Skydiving competitions are undertaken by, either, 4-Way or 8-Way Teams plus a dedicated videographer. The contests involve a team performing a set number of formations in the air, in a pre-set time. Each completed formation earns a point, and the teams repeat the fornmations as many times as possible. Only completed formations earn points.
The skydivers are either in a horizontal position (belly to earth) or vertical position (head or feet towards earth). This discipline takes place at vertical speeds often exceeding 190 kph and requires extreme focus and concentration.

Often just called ‘Accuracy’ this is one of the oldest airsports, and yet one of the most demanding. Competitors leave the aircraft at 3,500ft AGL and deploy their parachutes, then fly to a designated landing area where they have to strike a target with the heel of their foot. This target is in the middle of an inflated tuffet, and electronically records how close to dead center the strike is made.
The dead centre is only 2cm in diameter, and competitors aim to hit it with the heel of their shoe, which is sharpened to a point. A dead centre scores zero points, with each cm further away scoring an extra point. The aim is to score as few points as possible. Success in this sport demands a full understanding of the parachute and how it responds to the environment (wind) and utmost concentration at the moment of landing.

Competitors in Canopy Formation competition leave the aircraft at a designated altitude, usually 9,000 ft AGL, and open their parachutes quickly. They then fly to their team-mates and build a pre-determined formation, or stack, linking to their team-mates by hooking a foot around one of their suspension lines.Â
Sequential events involve a team of 2, or 4, competitors with a dedicated videographer, flying a sequence of formations, and repeating it as often as possible within a set time. Rotation events have the competitors build a vertical stack formation and the top man breaks, flies to the bottom of the stack and rejoins. This is repeated as many times as possible within the time limit. This discipline requires mastery of the parachute, expertise, and confidence.Â

With many disciplines of Air Sports being hard to spectate from the ground, Canopy Formation Demonstration Teams enable spectators to see the skill and training of top aerial athletes in action. Demonstration Teams will build large symmetrical formations in the sky, usually in a diamond formation, and fly them around the sky to entertain the audience. The best teams will also add pyrotechnics, smoke and fireworks to further enhance their performance.Â
From the moment the huge formations form to the spectacular starburst effect of them breaking apart, these performances both delight and educate the crowd. While not usually in competition with other teams, they often challenge themselves by attempting to set and break World Records. Members will also, often, fly large National and Symbolic flags around the sky to celebrate special occasions, as well as perform breathtaking demonstrations of canopy skills in pairs, with streamers and smoke plumes.

A Paramotor comprises a large inflatable wing, similar to a parachute but capable of ascending and descending. It is attached with a heavy duty harness to the pilot and an engine, and propeller. Quite possibly the most basic light aircraft possible, it gives the feeling of freedom of flight to the pilot. From a running start, the wing inflates and the pilot takes off. Carefully designed to allow precision flying, paramotors are perfect for competition or solo flight.Â
Consisting of thirteen pilots, the paramotor teams don’t only amaze onlookers with their precision flying and ability to create dynamic and exciting formations, they also successfully fly their light craft in regional, and international competitions.Â
There are three major disciplines in Paramotor competition, these are Paramotor Slalom, Paramotor Classic, and Paramotor Show. Thanks to their training, discipline, and focus the Qatar team have excelled in competition. The sport requires a full understanding of the handling of the Paramotor, confidence, good physical condition, and an ability to think quickly and respond appropriately to every situation. One of the Qatar team’s pilots even holds a Guinness World Record for achieving a speed of 86.62 KPH during a 50km Slalom event.Â

Qatar hosts a hot air balloon festival annually, and thousands are drawn to the spectacle of multi- coloured, and fantastically designed, balloons filling the sky. However, not many know that Qatar has its own competitive team that is training hard to represent the Nation on the International stage.
A relatively new addition to the roster of Air Sports, Drone Racing has the pilots stay on the ground, while they fly high powered drones around incredibly complex courses. Wearing sophisticated Virtual Reality, immersive headsets they see exactly what the drone sees, in what is known as First Person Perspective.
The Hot Air Balloon Sports Team has been established, and it will be dedicated to performing aerial displays and participating in international sports competitions.Â
This relatively new addition to the roster of Air Sports leaves the pilot on the ground, while they display their expertise at flying unmanned aircraft around elaborate courses.Â
